Marlin 1895XLR

I'm thinking of buying one of these. It fires 45/70 Government.

Tell me your thoughts on it if you have any firsthand experiences with one.

Very pretty rifle and I need a 45/70. (Wife would argue need vs. want... lol) I think I can get one locally for about $690.00 plus tax.

Do it $690 is a good price! I know about the "need vs want" thing! 45/70 is a good cartridge for reloading, pretty simple for a rifle cartridge.

I have one of these short Marlins in .444, great rifle in the oak scrub I hunt in.

The only problem, if you consider it a problem, is the long barreled big bore marlins kick like a mule on speed.

I have had two of the Marlin 45-70s. They are SWEET. Get it, you will be pleased. I had the blue steel 1895, and then when they came out with the stainless 1895GS I had to have it. Then I needed some quick cash to purchase some Gold Eagles, so I sold several guns. I regret that, because I miss my 45-70. I will be purchasing another 1895GS real soon.

45-70 in a Marlin is classic! The 45-70 is one bad assed round.....not a long shooter...but kill anything in Notrh America out to 150....200 yards.

I like it better for deer than the 30-30.

Unbeatable brush and under 100 yards gun. Great Deer, Bear, Hog killing tool.

Remember - if you want to get into reloading a little....WOW you can turn it into a super powerful rifle....the Marlin can take it....but the factory loads are designed for much older and weaker guns and I think a maximum of 25,000 PSI for the old trapdoor springfields.

Take advantage of the handloads and it nearly doubles the energy over a factory load.....puts it up at nearly 3000 ft-lbs and is chucking a 400 grain slug down range at 1800 fps.....this is like a super hot 12 ga 1 oz slug.....but better long range ballistics.

Zeroed at 200 yards it has a mid-range-trajectory of 13" high.....a bit too much....so zero it for 100 - 125 yards and live with some drop further out...just hold over on the long shots.

Modern loads in the 45-70 is one bad boy from deer up through grizzly bear out to 150 ish yards.

I have an original 45-70 springfield....and have told myself I would one day own a stainless, laminate Marlin.....your gun.....I'd have to buy it right away if i were you.....

A true classic.

Hog and deer hunting in 150 yards or less here. Usually less, much less.

The Marlin 45/70 is definately a zombie killer. Get it. I've really been looking at them hard lately but I have one other gun to get before the 45/70.
